What is Podcasting Kit for SharePoint®
Podcasting Kit for
SharePoint® (PKS) is an accelerator for social media, using
podcasting and social networks to deliver the next generation
knowledge management solution to Microsoft customers.
Built on top of Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 and
SilverLight 2, PKS delivers an integrated experience with a wide
variety of devices including PC, iPOD, Zune™, Windows Mobile
phones and other podcast capable devices.
Microsoft has recently offered the PKS development platform to
customers and partners via Codeplex.
Utilizing an open source development model, Microsoft believe
that the strength and power of the PKS platform will encourage
many new customers and partners to investigate and exploit
social media.

An Inspired Idea
The Inspiration
In September 2006, a need to provide learning and sales content in a
shorter, modular and mobile format was recognized by Ludovic Fourrage (Group
Program Manager of Academy), and together with Phil Morel (Director of
Academy) they envisioned the creation of a "YouTube in the Enterprise“. The
program was named Academy Mobile.
The Implementation
In July of 2007, Academy Mobile was launched inside Microsoft and became the first enterprise podcasting solution. Built on top of SharePoint 2007, it was aimed at providing knowledge via social media nuggets to Microsoft employees
The Launch
In January 2008, "Academy Mobile vNext" development began to meet Microsoft’s customers’ growing needs and embrace a larger vision of social interaction via CodePlex. Academy Mobile vNext eventually was renamed to Podcasting Kit for SharePoint (PKS) in order to resonate in the minds of the public and more effectively identify itself.
The Legacy
As of May 2010, Academy Mobile counted over 10000 podcasts, over 5000 podcasters, and has over 90,000 each month and continues to grow. Since PKS launched over 20,000 customers have downloaded it to enable greater levels of sharing within their corporations.
